When preparing for a crewed yacht charter in islands, packing thoughtfully ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here’s a packing list to consider:

1. Clothing:

  • Swimwear: Pack several swimsuits, the more the better, including cover-ups for beach outings and lounging on deck. You can expect to have the opportunity to swim at least once a day.
  • Casual Wear: Light, breathable clothing such as shorts, t-shirts, sundresses, and sarongs.
  • Evening Wear: Sundresses and casual wear are the norm for dining out at restaurants. Make sure that anything you bring you are comfortable with getting in and out of a dinghy in!
  • Light Jacket or Sweater: Evenings can occasionally be cooler, so bring a light jacket or sweater for comfort.
  • Activewear: If you plan on engaging in water sports or hiking, include athletic wear. Sun shirts with a UPF rating would be particularly helpful onboard, and if you plan to paddleboard.

2. Footwear:

  • Sandals or Flip-Flops: Essential for beach excursions and onboard comfort. Avoid leather sandals or flip flops as the salt water is not kind to leather materials.
  • Casual Shoes: For dining out and exploring islands.
  • Dress Shoes: Completely not needed, pack a few extra bathing suits instead!

3. Sun Protection:

  • Sunscreen: Reef safe, high SPF, water-resistant sunscreen to protect against sunburn. sunscreen washes off swimmers and snorkelers into the ocean each year. Most commercial grade sunscreen products are made with ingredients that cause “bleaching” and kills the reef. It is helpful to also consider bringing clothing with a UPF rating, and rash guards that allow you to easily swim and be protected from sunburn.
  • Sunglasses: UV-protected sunglasses to shield your eyes from the sun. It wouldn’t hurt to bring two pair of sunglasses, so you have a backup pair just in case.
  • Hat or Cap: A wide-brimmed hat is ideal for additional sun protection.
  • Aloe Vera or After-Sun Lotion: To soothe skin after sun exposure.

4. Personal Items:

  • Toiletries: Bring your personal hygiene items such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and any specialty items you might need. Some yachts may provide these, but it’s good to check ahead.
  • Medication: Any prescription medications, along with basic first aid supplies (band-aids, pain relievers, etc.). Pharmacies are few and far between in the islands, it is best to bring medication with you and double check that you have everything you need.
  • Insect Repellent: Useful for protection from mosquitoes, especially during the evening or in certain areas. Reef safe repellant is recommended to protect the coral reefs.

5. Electronics:

  • Camera: To capture the stunning scenery and memorable moments. A GoPro is perfect for this situation, and you want to also be sure to have extra batteries, a charger and accessories that help the camera float in the event that it is dropped in the water.
  • Phone and Chargers: Ensure you have all necessary chargers and adapters for your devices.
  • E-Reader or Books: For relaxing on deck.

6. Miscellaneous:

  • Snorkeling Gear: Some yachts provide snorkeling equipment, but it’s a good idea to bring your own mask and snorkel if you have a preference. Check with your captain on this before investing in gear.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: To stay hydrated throughout your trip.
  • Dry Bag: Useful for keeping valuables dry during water activities, and when you head to shore from the yacht.
  • Travel Documents: Ensure you have your passport, travel insurance, and any other required documents. Paper is best here as often you will need to have easy access and might be without a cell signal.

7. Special Considerations:

  • Custom Requests: If you have any special dietary needs or preferences, inform the crew in advance. They can usually accommodate these with prior notice.
  • Fishing Gear: If you’re interested in fishing, check with the yacht’s crew about the availability of equipment.

By preparing with these essentials, you’ll be well-equipped to enjoy a smooth and enjoyable charter experience in the beautiful British Virgin Islands.
